Violence marked the start to 2009, as the city recorded its first homicide less than three hours into the new year when a drive by shooting left one man dead and another injured, police said.
The death came just hours after city and police officials touted the dramatic reduction in homicides in 2008 compared to the year before.
The first homicide in 2009 happened a little before 3 a.m., when men in a silver sedan fired into a 1992 Buick Century, on the 200 block of Chadwick Avenue, said Newark police Detective Todd McClendon.
